Electric vehicles (EV’s) use Permanent Magnet (PM) motors. Over the next decade, the number of EV’s on the road is expected to grow to more than 250 million! Earlier versions of EV motors were powered by induction motors, which did not use permanent magnets, however newer versions of EV motors are making use of permanent magnets in their designs, resulting in more powerful, more efficient vehicles.
In addition to the motors, EV’s use magnets for many other vehicle systems, including
- Exhaust
- Fuel system
- Entertainment
- Windows/Doors
- Engine systems
- Steering
- Brakes
- Transmission
- HVAC
This video shows how manufacturers have worked to improve the designs of their PM motors:
